![]() ![]() In addressing Singapore's ageing population and development in community care at the 2015 SG50 Scientific Conference of Ageing in Singapore, the Director of the Ministry of Health revealed critical data on Singapore's projected increasing ageing population ( Singapore Department of Statistics, 2021). In practical terms, an age-friendly city needs to adapt its infrastructures and services to be accessible to and inclusive of senior citizens with varying needs and capacities as the ageing population has numerous economic and financial implications affecting economic growth, public healthcare, and social support systems. And just two decades later, nearly two-thirds of the world's population will live in urban areas, up from just over half today, with nearly 1 billion older people living in cities in the developing world alone ( UN, 2015, 2019). Widely accepted statistics bring these challenges into clear focus: by 2030, more than 1 billion people-one in every eight -will be aged 65 or older. ![]() Two intersecting demographic trends are defining the 21st century: rapid surbanisation and an ageing population.
